Focus: Say NO to nuclear weapons, waste and power
1) Iran, nukes and the NPT: Reaching Critical Will has detailed resources every WILPFer should explore on Nuclear Iran?
2) Will the USA really bomb Iran nuclear sites? Seymour Hirsch thinks so. Read Amy Goodman's April 12 interview.
3) Doctrine for Joint Nuclear Operations is another must read. This controversial Pentagon draft was issued in March 2005. The final draft, long overdue, was expected in 2006, but has since been withdrawn. There is evidence, however, that the policies themselves have not changed. These are detailed plans for actual use of nuclear weapons and for fighting both localized and global warfare. This includes nuclear strategies for offensive use in pre-emptive warfare, ground fighting in a radiological environment, warning allies to take precautionary measures (!!!) when a nuclear strike is to be made within or near their territory, and identifying China as a potential target with details on strategy. And did you know that once the President (George W. Bush) gives the order to use nuclear weapons regional commanders will make hour to hour decisions on targeting? Of course none of them -- or us -- may last very long.
4) Please take time to thoroughly explore Reaching Critical Will. Here are the resources you need to understand the issues of nuclear weapons, waste and power. Check the Index of critical issues in Disarmament and Non-Proliferation. Explore the rich variety of publications, most of which can be read on-line. Subscribe to the list serve on the UN Conference on Disarmament, the sole body negotiating disarmament treaties. There is so much more: this is a rich treasure trove. Use it!
5) And keep abreast of EYE on Congress alerts on nuclear disarmament, military budget, and other war/peace issues in Congress. Note especially Congress can Stop the US/India nuclear deal. And keep writing those letters to Representatives, Senators, and to editorial pages. Our voices must be heard!
6) One of the best web sites on Nuclear weapons, waste and power in the USA is kept by Alliance for Nuclear Accountability. ANA is a network of 34 organizations, most of them nuclear watchdogs at various nuclear weapons production and nuclear waste sites around the country. They bring professional expertise and credibility when they lobby Congress, the DoD and the DOE. Read the government Report on the Nuclear Weapons Complex of the Future. Download the 2006 Fact Sheets near the bottom of the right hand column. And there is more to inform you and (turn your hair gray).
